Aprender idiomas con canciones y música ayuda a motivar a los estudiantes. Se pueden realizar actividades para aprender ó revisar vocabulario, estructuras gramaticales, pronunciación, hacer  traducciones...como por ejemplo, ejercicios donde se escucha una canción y luego se rellenan huecos, se reorganizan párrafos ó bien se puede trabajar con proyectos donde los alumnos pueden hacer una exposición oral dando su opinión de una canción elegida...
La intención es aprender inglés divirtiéndose. Una idea que ha desarrollado la UNED con un curso llamado "English through songs" en el que sus alumnos han perfeccionado este idioma con las letras de las canciones de grandes grupos como The Beatles, The Police o los Rolling Stones.

THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH IN TEN MINUTES.

The history of English in ten minutes is an entertaining and humorous video that tells you how English grew from a small tongue into a major global language before reflecting on the future of English in the 21st century.

PROYECTO ECO

Hago referencia en la entrada de hoy al Proyecto ECO. Pienso que puede ser una herramienta útil y práctica para la función docente. ECO ( E-learning, Communication, Open-data) es un proyecto europeo basado en Recurso Educativos Abiertos que da acceso gratuito a una lista de MOOCs ( cursos online abiertos masivos) en 6 idiomas entre ellos el español y el inglés. Cursos que ofertan diversas entidades colaboradoras de los distintos paises, como por ejemplo sus universidades.

El objetivo principal de este proyecto es ampliar el acceso a la educación y mejorar la calidad y la rentabilidad de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en Europa.

El proyecto ECO ofrece un portal para que sus usuarios cuenten con una nueva metodología basada en el concepto MOOC, y asi mismo puedan crear sus propios MOOCs para desarrollar sus acciones formativas.

DYLAN THOMAS

National Museum Wales

This day in history Dylan Thomas was born in 1914 at the start of World War I. His first home was in Swansea, in South Wales. Later he lived in England, and visited America, but Wales was his real home. He died in 1953.
 Dylan Thomas is the most famous Welsh poet, and his most famous work is "Under Milk Wood". It was first broadcast on radio by the BBC in 1954. It is about the people of a small town in Wales.
 In his poems, he used words in fresh and exciting ways. He loved the sounds of words, so his poems are great for reading aloud. He wrote about his life, his friends, and about Wales. Some poems are serious, some are funny.

I am devoting this post today to talking about Mindful Schools. There are already quite a few schools around the world which have decided to apply mindfulness to their curriculum. Teachers and educators are also being trained to use mindfulness in their classrooms.
Mindfulness is a way of focussing life, being conscious of the present situation, of breathing, of helping to give a more healthy and intelligent response to problems,  frustrations,  pain...
It also creates space, changing impulsive reactions to thoughtful responses.
The application of mindfulness by students and educators has the potential to improve academic achievement, mental health, and inter- and intra-personal relationships.

 This post is devoted to encouraging creativity by stimulating student´s imagination.
According to Fiona Mauchline, teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer, promoting creativity in the classroom resolves around emotional investment, engaging the senses, playing with language and conveying absolute personalisation in the outcome.
 The activity I have chosen is related to a video clip that deals with the Cycle of Life in a creative way. Every video tells a story so, as a warming up exercise, we could ask students to describe:

•  what they see 
• what they hear 
• how they feel
•  who they see 
• whether they like it or not and why?... 

Another activity we could do is to revise the vocabulary related to family and then to describe a favourite member of their family: their physical appearance and other aspects such as emotions, senses... This exercise could be also used to revise the present simple tense. We could ask questions such us:

• What colour of eyes, hair, skin has he/she got ?
•  What does his/ her voice sound like ? 
• What makes him/ her laugh ? 
• How does she /he walk?
• What do you have in common?... 

 Finally, students could write a short essay titled "Imagine Life " using the vocabulary and language  grammar used in the class.

I am devoting this post to talking about the website called  Film English.

This site promotes the innovative and creative use of film in English language teaching and learning. All of the lesson plans revolve around the use of video and film to teach English. The lessons promote critical thinking in the language classroom, and encourage learners to reflect on values while learning a language. There are different levels and themes.

IDIOMS

New English Centre.

"Beat around the bush" means "Andarse con rodeos"

 Idioms are words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally.  In other words, when used in everyday language, they have a meaning other than the basic one you would find in the dictionary.  Every language has its own idioms.  Learning them makes understanding and using a language a lot easier and more fun!

 For example the idiom " to run the show " is equivalent to the Spanish expression " tener la sartén por el mango", " to hit the ceiling " means " subirse a la parra ".

I recommend spending one minute a day to learn an English idiom and then try to use it in your everyday conversations.

The following video will explain the idiom to be used in context, which is the best way of learning.

WORD CLOUDS

I will devote this post to talking about the uses of “word clouds” for teaching English.
But first, I will describe briefly how to create word clouds and cloud narratives.
You can use Wordle which is a programme for generating “word clouds” from any texts that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You just have to click on " create your own " section, paste the text you choose and then you can change the words in the clouds with different fonts, layouts, and colour hints. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to use as you wish.
Therefore, talking about some applications of word clouds for teaching English could be:
use them to introduce or revise vocabulary and grammar, to engage students to create and tell stories, and students can even create their own word cloud or cloud narrative to show and present in the class. In short, using word clouds in the classroom is a creative way of teaching which helps to motivate students to learn.
Finally, I will include an example of a word cloud I created from one of my texts:

The British Council offers a series of videos to see how to say things right in very different situations.
The situation I have chosen for this post is how to understand the differences between British and American English. The activity consists of a warm-up, preparation exercise and then, a task to do after watching the video.

APRENDIZAJE COLABORATIVO EN EL AULA

 Trabajo colaborativo y cooperativo.

 Dedico esta entrada para exponer unas pautas que pueden fomentar el trabajo cooperativo y colaborativo en clase.

El trabajo cooperativo y colaborativo para la realización de tareas y proyectos tiene muchas ventajas; por ejemplo que los alumnos aprenden como ayudarse, habilidades sociales,  aprender a aprender, aprendizaje más autónomo, a resolver conflictos...
Pero para que la dinámica del grupo funcione bien, es necesario tener en cuenta unas pautas:

1. Una interacción directa con todos los miembros del grupo que fomente buena comunicación.
2. Una interdependencia positiva. Es decir, cada miembro del grupo tiene que confiar y depender del  trabajo que están realizando sus otros compañeros.
3. Responsabilidad individual. Pero cada uno tiene la responsabilidad de hacerse cargo de su tarea adjudicada en el grupo.
4. Asignación de papeles: también es necesario que cada miembro del grupo asuma un papel diferente para coordinar, supervisar y presentar el trabajo realizado.

Con estos aspectos bien definidos en el grupo, hay más posibilidades de que el proyecto ó la tarea se realicen con éxito y productividad.

 El diccionario de Macmillan, propone un juego ameno y sencillo para repasar no sólo las formas de los verbos irregulares sino también la forma del presente y del gerundio. COSTA BRAVA: A GORGEOUS PLACE FOR A HOLIDAY

HOLIDAY OR HOLIDAYS ?

En  español siempre se utiliza la forma plural “vacaciones” pero en inglés tanto la forma singular como plural es posible.  En esta entrada voy a explicar cómo decir correctamente vacaciones en ingles y cuándo utilizar "holiday" y cuándo "holidays."

 Holiday/s es la palabra que se utiliza en inglés británico.  En inglés americano se usa vacation/s y su uso de las formas singular y plural es diferente al de holiday/s en algunos contextos.  En este post voy a  tratar sólo holiday y holidays.

• Como en español, se usa “holidays” en plural cuando:

1.  se refiere a un periodo de tiempo, por ejemplo:

The summer holidays	Las vacaciones de verano
The Christmas holidays	Las vacaciones de Navidad
The Easter holidays	Las vacaciones de Semana Santa
etc

2.  se refiere a más de un viaje, por ejemplo:
How many holidays did you have last year?
¿Cuántas vacaciones tuviste el año pasado?
I had two holidays last year: in the summer I went to Italy and in the winter I went to Paris
Tuve dos vacaciones el año pasado: en el verano fui a Italia y en el invierno fui a París.
Pero

• Se usa “holiday” en singular cuando:

1.  se quiere decir “de vacaciones” y se dice “on holiday”, por ejemplo:
I’ll be on holiday next week.
Estaré de vacaciones la semana que viene.
2.  se refiere a un solo viaje, por ejemplo:
How was your holiday in Italy?
¿Qué tal tus vacaciones en Italia?
Además de ser la palabra inglesa para  “vacaciones”, también se utiliza “holiday” en otras situaciones, por ejemplo:

Un día festivo	Bank holiday o Public holiday
Días festivos	Bank holidays o Public Holidays

Ejemplos:
Next Monday is a bank holiday so we’re going away for a long weekend*.
El próximo lunes es día festivo así que saldremos de fin de semana largo.
There are more bank holidays in Spain than in the UK.
Hay más días festivos en España que en el Reino Unido.

 En el Reino Unido, con la excepción del día de Navidad (Christmas Day), el día de San Esteban (Boxing Day) y el Viernes Santo (Good Friday), los días festivos siempre se celebran el lunes después del día oficial.  Por lo tanto, el concepto de “puente” no existe allí.

Voy a dedicar la entrada de hoy a Londres y los preciosos lugares que se pueden visitar en esta gran ciudad cosmopolita. La visita de los sitios más emblemáticos es obligada.
Por ejemplo, un paseo por el río Támesis disfrutando de las vistas maravillosas del puente de la Torre de Londres, de la Catedral de San Pablo , The London Eye (la noria), el Parlamento, El Big Ben....
También merece la pena conocer  The City, la zona empresarial donde se divisa el "Skyline "con edificios rascacielos como: The Landmark East Tower, Shard London, St George Wharf Tower...
Además se pueden visitar las avenidas Regent Street and Oxford Street llenas de vida comercial con las tiendas, almacenes  y restaurantes más " Chic " y " trendy" del momento.
Si se quieren ver los estrenos de películas, las mejores pantallas se encuentran en Leicester Square, donde también se pueden conseguir los " last minute tickets " para asistir a uno de los mejores musicales que se muestran en el West End.
Para quien le guste disfrutar de la naturaleza, hay bonitos, extensos parques y jardines como el de St James´s park cerca de Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Regent's Park, Kensington Gardens y muchos otros.
Y cómo no, uno debe perderse entre las calles que comunican Trafalgar Square y Covent Garden para realizar alguna compra o simplemente ir de "window- shopping "deleitándose con los diferentes comercios de moda, los pequeños y coquetos locales artesanales y de antigüedades, los edificios de época victoriana y las características tiendas de té " tea shops" donde se puede hacer una parada y disfrutar de un "afternoon cream tea ".
Como alternativa, uno puede tomarse una cerveza en un Pub tradicional inglés. Los Pubs forman parte de la cultura y vida social británica,  donde también sirven comidas y los domingos puedes disfrutar los tradicionales " Sunday roasts ".
En fin, hay innumerables lugares y deliciosos rincones que visitar...

ACTIVIDAD LONDON WEBQUEST:
Con esta entrada, pretendo que los estudiantes  conozcan la ciudad y  realicen primero un trabajo de investigación en internet sobre Londres y después elaboren un proyecto ó bien de "scrapwork", con murales, ó  una presentación de powerpoint, donde utilicen fotografías y describan los lugares que más les gustaría visitar.
 Para empezar y como ejercicio de calentamiento y aproximación a la actividad, los alumnos explican en inglés el significado de las palabras en negrita de la descripción de Londres realizada al principio de esta entrada. Después comienzan el proyecto, que se puede efectuar en grupos y que culminaría en una exposición oral en inglés de todo el trabajo realizado.
Los estudiantes tienen que tener un nivel intermedio avanzado, se podría desarrollar por ejemplo, con los alumnos que cursan 1º y 2º bachillerato ampliación. Finalmente se evalúa todo el proceso teniendo en cuenta parámetros como aspectos lingüísticos trabajados en clase, vocabulario, gramática, pronunciación, fluidez, creatividad, trabajo en equipo...

En inglés, se pregunta la hora de varias formas, las más comunes son:
What time is it? se traduce en español: Qué hora es ?
What´s the time ? se traduce igual que la primera expresión.
Could you tell me the time please ? esta expresión es más formal y se traduce: Me podría decir la hora por favor?
Voy a dedicar esta entrada a explicar de una manera sencilla como se dice la hora en inglés a nivel básico. Para ello, incluyo dos clips. El primero está en español y el segundo en inglés. ALL THAT JAZZ !!!

Teaching English with Jazz Chants.

I am going to devote this post to Jazz Chants and how we can use them in our classroom.
But what is a jazz chant? According to Carolyn Graham,  a jazz chant is a rhythmic expression of spoken American English. She, as a musician, a teacher and a teacher trainer, realised that the sound of spoken English reflected exactly the rhythm of traditional American Jazz. She has also experienced that a student can easily memorise any material if you present it with rhythmic patterns.
On her website, you can find examples of Jazz Chants with teacher´s notes, their scripts and the audio  MP3 files. She also gives students instructions on how to create their own jazz chants: http://jazzchants.net/

You can use jazz chants in a variety of fun ways. You can practice stress and rhythm with your class, to help your students sound more natural when they speak English. Also, because each jazz chant focuses on different vocabulary and grammar, you can use them to review important words and structures! All jazz chants follow a similar pattern: they are short and simple, repetitive, with a rhythmic pattern, catchy and easy to memorise.

Brilliant tragicomedy film where diverse serious topics of life are intermingled with a big dose of humour.
It is recommended for advanced students as a good listening and pronunciation activity since you can appreciate two different accents: London and Scottish.
It is a BBC comedy starring David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, and Billy Connolly. It is directed and written by  Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
It was filmed on location in Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands . The film was released in the UK on 26 September 2014. It has got beautiful sceneries, a lovely soundtrack, a magnificent performance and an original plot. It is definitely a must.

ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD

 The importance of learning English. 

The activity I am proposing today is related to the importance of learning English and to make students realise this fact so that their motivation to learn English increases.
Before watching the presentation: " English around the world ", the teacher brainstorms some ideas from the students by asking questions such us:

1. How many people speak English around the world ?
2. What is the difference between a second language and a foreign language?
3. Do you know the countries where English is an official language ?
4. Give 4 reasons why English is considered to be an international language... 

Then, students watch the presentation and check whether their answers were correct.

Finally, they write an essay titled the importance of learning English.          ( 150-200 words ).

ART IN THE CLASSROOM

WEBQUEST AND ORAL ACTIVITY.

La actividad que voy a explicar en esta entrada tiene que ver con la enseñanza del inglés teniendo como tema transversal la asignatura de arte. Acabo de realizar un taller sobre arte especialmente pictórico que  me ha hecho reflexionar sobre la importancia de aprender esta materia y consecuentemente he elaborado una unidad didáctica cuyos objetivos son:

1. concienciar a los alumnos de la importancia de aprender y apreciar el arte.
2. aprender vocabulario nuevo relacionado con temas de arte y repasar estructuras gramaticales.
3. desarrollar el pensamiento crítico y creativo.
4. promover el trabajo cooperativo.

Es una actividad destinada a estudiantes con un nivel B1+ y alumnos de 1º y 2º de bachillerato.
La unidad didáctica que durará 3 ó 4 sesiones incluye un trabajo de búsqueda en internet sobre un cuadro y un pintor que tendrán que elegir de una lista que proporcionará el profesor.
También la actividad incluirá una presentación oral e implicará trabajo en equipo.

 Sugiero que esta tarea podría realizarse en colaboración con el departamento de Historia y Geografía cuando impartieran en su programación escolar ciertos temas relacionados con el arte. De esa manera podría convertirse en un proyecto interdisciplinar y culminar en una excursión a un museo o galería de arte.

This post is about Tomorrowland, the film.

Tomorrowland (titled Disney Tomorrowland: A World Beyond in the United Kingdom) is a 2015 American Science fiction adventure film directed by Brad Bird.

The film tells the story of a former boy genius (Clooney) and a young girl (Robertson), who travel to an ambiguous dimension known as "Tomorrowland", where their actions directly affect the world and themselves.

This film is full of adventure, action, creativity, and its special effects are very innovative and very well-made. The positive message of the film is reassuring as well. I believe that  Science fiction lovers won´t be disappointed.

I strongly recommend the film to improve your English provided that you watch it in its original version, with or without subtibles depending on your level.

SHAUN THE SHEEP TV SERIES

Shaun the Sheep Activity.

I would like to devote this post  to Shaun the Sheep TV Series and how we can use its episodes with our students in the classroom.
First of all, I will include some information about this series:
Shaun the Sheep is a British stop-motion animated television series, a spin-off of the Wallace and Gromit franchise. It has been very popular not only in the U.K but also around the world.
Besides, a film called "Shaun the Sheep the Movie "has recently been released at the cimenas which I strongly recommend.  For further information you can look at the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_the_Sheep.

Each episode is very short so it is ideal for a lesson, since you show the video and then you do the exercises related to that episode. Additionally, it is good fun, the students love it. It could be used as a warm-up or cool-down activity to revise vocabulary for example in a different lesson.

EXÁMENES OFICIALES DE INGLÉS

Equivalencias de Niveles y Exámenes Oficiales de Inglés. 

Dedicamos esta entrada a hablar de los Examenes Oficiales de Inglés en relación al Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas ( MCERL )
Los certificados y títulos a los que me voy a referir acreditan las competencias lingüísticas necesarias y  son reconocidos en todo el mundo. Además representan una herramienta importante para el futuro profesional.
Pero ¿Cuántos tipos de exámenes, certificados y convalidaciones existen actualmente? En principio parece complicado conocer las equivalencias entre los distintos centros examinadores.
Los siguientes cuadros muestran un pequeño esquema de las acreditaciones de reconocimiento mayoritario aceptadas tanto por organismos públicos como empresas del sector privado así como la equivalencia aproximada entre títulos de distintos examinadores. Cada examen tiene unas exigencias y modalidades específicas.

Los Exámenes de Cambridge tanto el del nivel más básico KET como el PET el  FCE , el CAE como el del más avanzado el Proficiency CPE,  quizás sean los más conocidos y están reconocidos internacionalmente por diversas entidades gubenamentales, universidades, empresas tanto públicas como privadas como prueba del conocimiento de la lengua inglesa.
El  IELTS (International English Language Testing System) es de Cambridge en colaboración con el consejo británico ( British Council ) y el  IELTS de Australia.
Cambridge también tiene exámenes relacionados con el mundo de los negocios ( BEC ).

El TOEFL ( Test of  English as a Foreign Language ) , examen de inglés como lengua extranjera, es un requisito indispensable para entrar en las universidades de los EEUU. Es un inglés académico.

El Trinity College es una institución inglesa que realiza exámenes internacionales totalmente reconocidos en U.K como órgano independiente. Trinity acredita no sólo los conocimientos en lengua inglesa, sino también en música y danza internacionalmente.
